4 CDC (Centers for Disease Control) Tobacco Prevention & Control Program Goals:                      

     1.  Promote smoking cessation for youth & adults
     2.  Prevent youth initiation of tobacco use, using school based, 
          scientifically proven curricula.
     3.  Reduce exposure to secondhand smoke.
     4.  Eliminate disparities between population groups, such as 
          pregnant women and minorities.

Kentucky Statistics

*Kentucky leads the nation with the highest smoking rates.
          *Kentucky's adult smoking rate is 28%, U.S. average is 21%.
          *Kentucky's youth smoking rate is 34%, U.S. average is 23%.
          *The current adult smoking rate for the Purchase District is 25-26%.

What is Secondhand Smoke?

Also known as environmental tobacco smoke (ETS) or passive smoke

A mixture of the smoke given off by the burning end of tobacco products (sidestream smoke) and the smoke exhaled by smokers (mainstream smoke)

Made up of over 4,000 chemical compounds and 40 Group A carcinogens known to cause cancer in humans for which there is no safe level of exposure (U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.  Proposed Identification of Environmental Tobacco Smoke as a Toxic Air Contaminant: Air Resources Board, Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment; June 24, 2005.)
