Postponing Sexual Involvement

What:

The P.S.I. program is an abstinence based program that is designed to help young people develop skills to resist pressures to become sexually involved.

Where:

The Purchase District Health Department's Health Educators offer the nationally recognized teen pregnancy prevention program, "Postponing Sexual Involvement" to all middle schools in the district.

Who:

High School juniors and seniors are chosen by school counselors to be teen leaders.  Teen leaders go through 20 hours of training led by our health educators before they present the sessions to the middle school students.  The middle school teacher and health educator are always present at the school when the teen leaders are presenting the sessions.

How:

Teen leaders lead group discussions and conduct activities designed to help students:
     1.  Learn about the risks of early sexual involvement.
     2.  The general nature of relationships.
     3.  Societal pressures which influence sexual behavior.
     4.  Assertive responses that teens can use in peer pressure situations.

Does It Work?
The last statistics released by the state of Kentucky show that the teen pregnancy rate has dropped overall for the state.  This drop has been partly contributed to seven years of P.S.I. in 90 counties out of 120.  We have found that not only the middle school students benefit from the experience, but so do the teen leaders.
